Genesis Development Scheme
Endeavour Drive, Basildon SS14 3WF
Endeavour Drive is a high-quality industrial development comprising of four detached steel units, located in central Basildon. Built to a high specification by Genesis, the development delivers a mix of office and warehouse space, within a secure private compound.
Steel frames and metal-clad elevations provide over 90,000 sq. ft of internal space, whilst a secure outside space offers parking for over 100 vehicles. With so much activity, security at Endeavour Drive is of the utmost importance. The Genesis team contacted the Carter Group to provide a solution that ensures that the site, and organisations working within the units were perfectly protected 24/7.
After a full review of site requirements, the Carter Group commercial team delivered a project plan, focussing on controlling access onto site, and safety once present. A programme including automated gates, access control, CCTV, GSM door entry systems (keyless entry) and vibrant street lighting provided a safe journey from street, to desk.
Before works could begin, significant ground work had to be undertaken to prepare the site for installation. The Carter Group civils team undertook installation of two 50mm ducts one for 230-volt power cables, and one for data and signal cables. A solid concrete base for each of the two CCTV columns was also installed, as well as a secure housing for the all-important equipment cabinet – the hub for the entire security operation.

Automated gates and access control
Based on the busy Southend Arterial Road, close to a busy town centre, the Endeavor Drive development has plenty of passing traffic. With this in mind, the team at Genesis were keen to ensure that the entrance was properly protected, and automated gates provides a secure and professional welcome to the space. With a substantial vehicular gate in place, the Carter Group team installed two heavy duty faac motors to each gate leaf, delivering a smooth opening, with all busy cabling hidden securely under the drive. A pedestrian gate was also installed.
With a number of organisations sharing the space, remote access control was an imperative addition. A NET2 Paxton proximity reader was installed on the right-hand vehicular gate post, handy for drivers, which allows tenants to open the main gates via a management-issued fob. An automotive number plate recognition system (ANPR) was installed onto the front gate post, and pre-programmed with all current staff vehicle details, which also automatically opens the gate on approach.
GSM door entry systems (keyless entry)
Tenants gaining access was not the only consideration for management, a solution had to be found to allow visitors easy access to the site too. The Carter Group installed a key code GSM system on the right-hand vehicular gate post, with a set code for opening both the pedestrian and vehicular gate.
As well as a key code option, the GSM system also has an option to call the reception phone of each individual warehouse. Once answered, the gate can be opened remotely from the unit, by pressing * or # on the in-unit handset. An ideal solution for visitor entry.
CCTV
With such a sizeable site and many comings-and-goings at all hours of the day and night, 24-hour CCTV is the best solution to provide wide-spread monitoring of movement within the area. Given the scale of the space concerned, it was important to ensure that any cameras fitted were able to view a wide space, so Carter Group installed two Alton columns, in able to mount cameras high, allowing for a wide view. One camera focuses on the gate as the primary access point, and another at the vehicles approaching the gate from the units. A further camera fitted with a tracking device was also added in
Street lighting
As a 24-hour operation, proper lighting of the site and approach was key. With safety and security in mind, the Carter Group installed an 18-meter lighting column compete with LED street light, providing bright, energy efficient lighting for the pedestrian gate and all entry controls.
